This illustration is inspired by the legend of Puteri Gunung Banang, a mystical princess said to live on a mountain in Batu Pahat, Johor. While no one’s really seen her, the story reflects old Malay belief, where the sea meant power, the land meant kings, and the mountain had its own princess. Back in the day, traders sailing through the Melaka Strait would hear tales about the mountain and stop by out of curiosity. It was seen as a magical place, even compared to paradise in old songs. Until today, Gunung Banang still holds that quiet air of mystery and wonder.

What's the story behind your artwork?
“Mai Kedah!” is a cheerful artwork that invites everyone to come and see the beauty of Kedah. It shows iconic landmarks like Menara Jam Alor Setar, Menara Alor Setar, and the majestic Gunung Jerai. The golden paddy fields represent the hard work of Kedah people and why it’s called the “Rice Bowl of Malaysia.” The Rumah Toksu shows Kedah’s traditional charm, while the eagle with a straw hat brings out Langkawi’s famous and playful side. A bowl of thick and flavourful Laksa Kedah highlights the state’s delicious food. At the centre, I am riding a bicycle in ‘Baju Kedah Opah’ and kain batik, with an Oyen cat on my back. The oyen cat reflects how Kedah people are like oyen brave, confident and friendly. This artwork is a fun way to share Kedah’s culture, food, and kampung spirit.
